Yahoo Layoffs

It looks like Yahoo! apparently laid off almost 500 employees last week (2/13/2009) according to California’s WARN database. California requires employers to post notice 60 days in advance of any mass terminations (source).

Toyota Layoffs Avoided

Toyota recently opened a manufacturing factory in San Antonio, Texas which employs over 1,900 workers. The factory, less than two years old, will not shut down and layoffs which be avoided for now by instituting a reduced work week.

Goodyear Layoffs

Goodyear, a large tire manufacturer, has announced 5000 layoffs for the 2009 year. Last year, Goodyear announced 4000 layoffs which will mean an overall 9,000 employees will lose their jobs. In addition to the layoffs, Goodyear will be insituting salary freezes and a reduced work week for some employees.

Estee Lauder Layoffs + Hiring Freeze

Estee Lauder is a major player in the fragrance and cologne industry. Some of their notable brands include Michael Kors Beauty, Tommy Hilfinger Toiletries, and Sean John Fragrances among many others. They are now under a hiring freeze and will lay off 2,000 as they restructure for the present state of the economy.

AOL Time Warner Layoffs

AOL Time Warner is doing the rounds of layoffs in many of their divisions. They will be laying off 700 people at AOL, 800 people at Warner Brothers, and around 600 people in Time Warner’s publishing division. There will be no merit pay increases throughout this year and possibly into the future.

NASCAR layoffs and woes

With a huge downturn in sponsorships and attendance, NASCAR has been having a few difficult years. Since November, more than one thousand team members have been laid off in the sport as revenue across the board plummets. Attendance is down 20% from the 2006 racing season.

Newspaper Jobseekers

New Jobless Claims

The Labor Department reported that the number of laid-off workers seeking jobless benefits rose last week to a seasonally adjusted 626,000 (43,000 more claims than expected by the analysts).
