As I try to cover all of the news surrounding the economic situation, I’ve ignored news about the stimulus. But after the President did his national address last night, I felt I needed to write something.
I personally am in support of a stimulus for our nation but I think it is being rushed through Congress without enough debate. Spending almost $1 trillion should necessitate at least a couple weeks worth of discussion and adaptation at the least. What would the hurt be in breaking up the stimulus into two smaller programs?
Stimulus A - up to $250 billion in programs which directly result in the maximum amount of new jobs which improving national infrastructure.
Stimulus B – a followup which contains the remaining programs. This program would be passed as early as 6 months later if the economic situation deteriorates. This would give us a chance to see any tangible impact from the first stimulus program.

I think it is important to act quickly to help those who have lost their job and families whose mortgages are in trouble. However, we must act intelligently and not panic. The current amount of spending would pay off 90% of mortgages in America. I think that might even be a better way to spend it. Halve mortgage payments (freeing up income for spending) while earning back money we could pay toward the national debt. America will be around in 60 years so there’s no rush.
You won’t find a consensus but at least we can say 10 years from now that we openly discussed all aspects of the stimulus bill.
