In 2007, there were approximately 512,000 families in the United States that were completely unemployed. In 2008, this number increased to 663,000 families that do not have a single employed worker. In April, nonfarm payroll employment decreased in 44 states and the District of Columbia and rose in 6 states. I’ve broken the data up into the largest increases and decreases in empoyment. Hewlett Packard has had a rough second quarter. Many of its businesses are suffering from major drops in revenue and profit. On May 19th, Hewlett Packard announced that it would cut about 2 percent of its work force. This is close to 6,420 people workers who will be laid off.
According to the New Mexico Business Weekly, the number of mass layoffs in April fell below the previous March levels. Manufacturing accounted for 39% of all mass layoffs in April.
